Crystals are powerful energetic tools — but just like anything that absorbs and holds energy, they need to be cleansed regularly. Whether you've just bought a new crystal, used one during a difficult time, or simply feel like its energy has become a little dull, cleansing resets it back to its natural state and restores its full energetic potential.

WHY DO CRYSTALS NEED CLEANSING?
Crystals are believed to absorb the energy of everything around them — the emotions of the people who handle them, the environments they're placed in, and the intentions they're used for. Over time, this accumulated energy can make a crystal feel heavy or less effective. Regular cleansing clears this stored energy and reactivates the crystal's natural properties.
As a general rule, cleanse your crystals when you first receive them, after any intense emotional use, once a month as part of a regular practice, or whenever they simply feel like they need it — trust your intuition.
THE BEST WAYS TO CLEANSE YOUR CRYSTALS
MOONLIGHT
One of the most popular and gentle cleansing methods, moonlight is safe for all crystals. Simply place your crystals on a windowsill or outside overnight during a full moon. The full moon's energy is particularly powerful for cleansing and recharging. Even on cloudy nights, the moon's energy still reaches your crystals — so don't worry if the sky isn't clear.
SAGE & SMOKE CLEANSING
Burning sage (also known as smudging) is an ancient practice used to clear negative energy from spaces and objects. Hold your crystal in the smoke of a burning sage bundle for 30–60 seconds, setting the intention that all stagnant or negative energy is being released. This method is safe for all crystals and is one of the quickest and most effective cleansing techniques.
SOUND
Sound cleansing uses vibration to shift and clear energy — making it ideal for large crystal collections as you can cleanse multiple pieces at once. Use a singing bowl, tuning fork, or even a playlist of high-frequency music (432hz or 528hz). Simply place your crystals near the sound source and allow the vibrations to wash over them for a few minutes.
SELENITE
Selenite is one of the few crystals that never needs cleansing itself — and it has the unique ability to cleanse other crystals simply by proximity. Place your crystals on a selenite charging plate or next to a selenite wand overnight. This is one of the easiest and most hands-off methods, perfect for everyday maintenance.
RUNNING WATER
Natural running water — like a stream or river — is a powerful cleanser, but tap water works too in a pinch. Hold your crystal under running water for 30–60 seconds while visualising any negative energy washing away. Important: not all crystals are water-safe. Avoid this method for soft or porous stones including selenite, malachite, pyrite, calcite, and any crystal ending in "-ite" that you're unsure about. When in doubt, choose a different method.
SUNLIGHT
A short burst of sunlight can be energising and cleansing for many crystals — but use this method with caution. Some crystals fade in direct sunlight, including amethyst, rose quartz, citrine, and aquamarine. Limit sun exposure to 1–2 hours maximum and avoid for any crystal with a rich colour you want to preserve.
EARTH
Burying your crystals in the earth — either in your garden or in a pot of soil — returns them to their natural environment and allows the earth to absorb and neutralise any stored energy. Leave them buried for 24 hours to a full week depending on how much cleansing you feel they need. Just remember to mark where you've buried them!
HOW OFTEN SHOULD YOU CLEANSE YOUR CRYSTALS?
There's no strict rule — it's largely intuitive. A good starting point is once a month, ideally around the full moon. If you use a crystal daily, for meditation, or during emotionally intense periods, cleanse it more frequently. If a crystal is purely decorative and rarely handled, a seasonal cleanse is plenty.
