STROMATOLITE — one of the oldest living things ever to exist on earth. Formed by ancient cyanobacteria — the first organisms to produce oxygen through photosynthesis — stromatolites are over 3.5 billion years old, making them among the most ancient biological structures on the planet. The oxygen those microscopic organisms produced literally created the atmosphere that made all complex life on earth possible. Every breath you take is, in a very real sense, a gift from the ancestors of this stone.
